Let’s Get Road-Test Ready!

Now that you’ve booked and paid for your Driving Test.  Please use this guide as reference to items you’ll need to bring and a refresher on the rules and policies.

To prevent paying all over again, driving test should be taken on the scheduled date. All re-schedule or retakes should be done within a month. 

Gather Your Student Documents

Depending on your age and which type of driver’s education you received, your document requirements will vary. Please review the appropriate section for your specific document list.

Students who attended a commercial school:

Must be between 16 and 24 years old and have completed a Texas TEEN drivers ed course.
Must have a DE 964 certificate (For Driver License Only).
Held a Texas learner’s permit for 6 months. The date is on the back of your permit.
Applicants 18 years plus that have DE-964 certificate must also watch ITTD video for ages 16 to 17.
Must have a ITTD Certificate. Watch and print here.

Students who attended Parent Taught:

Must be between 16 and 24 years old and have completed a Texas TEEN drivers ed course.
Must have a PT-964 certificate (For Driver License Only).
Held a Texas Learners License for 6 months. The date is on the back of your permit.
Must have an ITTD Certificate. Watch and print here.

Students who attended Alternative Method (Online classroom and separate In-Car lessons):

Must be between 16 and 24 years old and have completed a Texas TEEN drivers ed course.
Must have a DE 964 certificate-printed from your Online Course provider for classroom completion. (For Driver License Only)
Must have a DE 964 certificate provided by your In-Car lesson provider. (For Driver License Only)
Held a Texas learner’s permit for 6 months. The date is on the back of your permit
Must have a ITTD Certificate. Watch and print here.

Requirements for Adults 18-24 years of age:

Must have a valid Texas Learner’s License.
Must have an ADE-1317 or DE-964 certificate.
Must have a ITYD Certificate. Watch and print here.

Requirements for Adults 25 and older:

Must have a valid Texas Learners Permit
Must have a ITAD certificate. Watch and print here.

Gather Your Vehicle Documents

Current Texas Auto Registration
Paper Copy of Certificate of Insurance
Texas Licenses Plates on Front and Rear of Car (out of state plates not allowed)

Notes: 
Temporary Plates: “Texas Buyer” or “Metal Texas Dealer”
No Rental Cars
No unsafe tires

Important Reminders

All proper documentation MUST be presented at the time of check-in & the student’s car MUST pass inspection. If unable to meet ONE or BOTH of these requirements, the test will have to be rescheduled.  If you have chosen the single attempt option, you will need to rebook a new session at the full amount.  If you have chosen the Two Attempt option, this will be considered an attempt and you will need to rebook your session within 30 days.

We do NOT make copies or PRINT documents on your behalf.

You may reschedule a session (1) time for a fee of $20 (your vehicle) or $40 (our vehicle) if rescheduled within 24 hours of your originally scheduled time.  Reschedule here.

Learner’s Permits:  All learner’s permit must be current in order to administer driving test. Please renew if expired before the test.

ITD Certificate Requirement:  Completion of Impact Texas Driving (ITD) is required for all individuals taking a drive skills test. You are required to present a certificate of completion before taking the drive test and it must be dated within 90 days of the scheduled appointment. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR DPS ROAD TEST FEES.
During the road test, examiners are prohibited from helping or coaching you, or answering questions except those concerning directions.
